Exclamation root canal tooth reinfected

I had a root canal done on my 2nd bicuspid about six years ago. Two years after it was done i started feeling pain in the same area and was send to an endodontist who did an apiceotmy on the tooth (cleaning the root again by making an incision in my gum). That was four years ago. Yesterday i went to my regular dentist and just happened to mention to him that ever since then i still feel pressure when i touch my cheek from the outside in that area. It doesn't hurt when I chew on that tooth. He magnified the x-ray and told me that it seems like there is still residual infection in that area. He's sending me back to the endodontist who had done the apiceotmy four years ago. My question is should i go ahead with the surgery again. Will it ever get rid of my infection for sure or should i just get that tooth extracted? I have a heart murmur too (mitral valve prolapse) and don't want to be living with infection inside my mouth!!!! Someone please give me a suggestion!!!!

Re: root canal tooth reinfected

I really do not have any advice, but am going through the same thing, except that my root canal was done 12 years ago and I am facing my first apiectomy next month. It sounds like we have the exact same symptoms and everything. One thing my regular dentist recently tried was putting me on penicillin. It has flared up a few times in the past and whenver I took the antibiotics it would get better, sometimes not flaring up for more than a year, however this time it didn't work. That might be an option to try first. Its also the first thing my new endodontist asked when I went last week. It might be worth a try since its a lot easier and a lot cheaper!

Good luck to you!

Nancy
