Question wisdom teeth/smoking

i had 2 wisdom teeth pulled on the right side of my mouth on monday. i slipped up and smoked like 2 cigarettes in the first 3 days and sealed the area with gauze before i did this and inhaled instead of sucking with my lips. the bottom impacted tooth that was removed does not hurt at all and has been covered by the clot except for maybe like 25 % of it towards the back. so i guess the 2 smokes didn't affect anything as i'm appraoching day 4 post op and still on soft foods. now my question is, even with that little part still not covering the whole left socket(i'm guessing it grows back over time), is it alright for me to smoke 2 or 3 cigarettes a day? i'm a very light smoker to begin with but i did smoke every day for years before the operation. my dentist has 4-5 days on the phamplet for smoking. some dentist websites say 48-78 and some even 24hours or weeks, i'm so confused. i had smoked two cigs like i said, but is it alright to smoke a cigarette or two now since i'm on my 4th day post op and have no pain? i've heard the cocky non-smokers reply, just stop all together. but come on guys i need a real awnser for us people who do smoke.

also i was wondering if it's normal to only have the clot cover the hole partially after 3 or 4 days. every day it covers more but sometimes when i eat it looks like it looses some then gains some the next day to 12 hours. i'm just so scared of getting the dreaded dry socket and wanna play it safe

Re: wisdom teeth/smoking

hi. im on day 7. im a smoker, and have suffered through almost a week of no cigarettes. you should suffer too! just kidding.

honestly, i have been calling non stop to harrass my surgeon about the smoking. i have sufffered 3 emotional breakdowns from not having cigarettes...i sometimes wonder if dry socket can be as bad as THIS!

my surgeon told me that apprx. 5% of people get dry socket, but it goes up to over half with smokers. that was enough to scare me.

if i were you, i wouldnt smoke for a couple days. its interesting that you can actually see the clot -- i cant see **** in the back of my mouth. but i have heard of people mention "partial dry socket"....which sounds like what you might have. the clot will probably reform if you lay off the smoking. smoking seriously slows down healing.

another thing to keep in mind. dry socket is not the end of the world. it cant be fixed, only pain can be treated. so if you have it now, but are not in intense pain...there really isnt a problem.

i would get a nicotine patch. it will help a lot. the anxiety you will have about whether or not smoking is going to cause a problem is probably worse than the anxiety of going without a cigarette...

true, true... i think i'm gonna get a patch or something. is it just me or does prescrption pain killers like percocet make the cigarette withdraws worse? i don't know if this is bad or not but i woke up today and i have no pain, a ****** taste in my mouth, the clot looks like it has sunken in the hole but it looks like it healed a little more in some parts in the back. i'm guessing it's alright since no pain is really present but i' not smokong anymore! hopefully that will speed up the healing process. hell, maybe if i wouldn't have smoked i'd be smoking tomorrow or saturday and screwed myself out of it now.

from what i understand about the dry socket pain it's when the whole socket gets washed away prematurely but having partially dry socket or not being fully healed doesn't necessarly mean great pain and the longer left alone the faster it heals back to normal.. it's just the pain that posses the problem from there being no clot present at alll. it' feels like i'm having to carry a box that says, be very carefull fragile glass may break in my mouth or something all the time lol, it's nerve racking.

Re: wisdom teeth/smoking

what you described sounds like dry socket (the bad taste). some people have mild pain with it you know. its not always excrutiating....use salt water too! after you eat, smoke, anything...rinse with warm salt water.

and as i said before, dry socket can't be "treated" -- only the pain can. so if your not having pain, no biggie.

but to keep that from getting worse you should lay of the stogies. you dont sound like you smoke too much. i down a pack a day, so two 21 mg patches work real nice.

this has been the worst physical thing i have ever gone through. pain is not an issue -- nothing hurts really. its just WAITING.

you cant kiss. you cant eat. you cant drink beer. you cant smoke. you use narcotic pain killers, so you cant drive or operate heavy machinery. you just have to spend a week in the house as an invalid watching court tv and other tv garbage. its MISERABLE.

[Please refrain from using cuss/slang words. Saying something like "other tv garbage" is better. Thanks - Well-come Moderator.]

yeah i thought the smoke from smoking itself wasn't the real health problem and that it was nicotine becasue like beer or hard liquir it restricts blood not allowing the clot to from right. so i think you have risks too if you have a patch. the best thing i guess is to go cold turkey. i actually went cold turkey 2 months ago for 8 days, it was insane! but what actually helped me not smoke was good excercise and when i got ****ed as all hell i'd play on my drum set or go jam with my band for like 6 hours... that helped more than anyhting, to bang on those drums for hours lol. i might have go set my kit up and work my agitaion out!
