I went through the same thing, only difference is that it was done on a tooth without a root canal done yet. I cannot afford to have the 2 root canals and crowns this year but I dont want to lose these 2 teeth, so my dentist ground the teeth down to gum level and put in a temp filling. I will have partials that go over that root until next year when my dental benefits kick in and he will rebuild the tooth and crown it. I went home pain free, novicane wore off and I was fine, for about 12 hours. Woke up at 6am with the most excruciating pain you can imagine in a tooth. It lasted a few minutes, I had a few after shocks for about 2 hours and then it was gone. That was 2 weeks ago. Not a even a tingle of pain, even when I chew on it. Hope that is the case for you!
