You can read the various threads on amalgams. While I am a firm believer that dental amalgams are safe and effective (based upon peer reviewed current literature and studies), I also think that the bonded composite restorations are a better way to go for a number of reasons. The current generation of composites have excellent wear characteristics and bonded restorations (when done properly) result in less marginal leakage. They also look better.

It is unfortunate that we as a population have come to let insurance companies dictate our medical / dental treatment. Insurance companies look to maximize their profits in any way they can. Their profits are their primary concern. Your health is merely secondary. Bonded composite restorations are more expensive because the materials cost more and the time it takes to properly place one is longer. But the results are better and nicer. Amalgams are cheaper. Some insurance companies will pay for the amalgam because the amount they pay is less.

Why let the insurance company - comprised of people with MBAs, NOT medical degrees - dictate to you what procedures you may have done and what materials are used? If you can afford it, do what YOU think is best, not what your insurance company want you to do. Contact your employer or human resources department and let them know that the insurance plan they currently have is inadequate. Appeal to their own selfish interests as they have the same plan as you. Good luck.
