when will i ever get these braces off? - Dental Health Message Board

I got my braces on in 1999 and then I moved in 2000. We called the orthodontist and they said they would transfer my files, but somewhere along the way my files got destroyed. Now I have had them on for 7 years, 5 of which they have been completely disfunctional. All that's left is brackets and all I want is to have them off. No orthodontist will see me because I don't have my files. I even tried the UT College of Dentistry and they wouldn't see me because my brackets were left over from a private practice and they are afriad of getting sued. Please, if you have any suggestions, let me know. I have tried everything and I'm starting to lose hope. I can't have these the rest of my life, I don't think I deserve that. The brackets have even started to take a toll on my lips. I know every orthodontist patient experiences a great deal of pain, but at least with that pain comes the promise of improvement, which I am lacking. Please help.

I would be contacting the dental association and reporting your original dentist. The loss of the files is very unprofessional, look at what they are putting you through! No only were your files lost, but they are preventing any other dentist from giving you assistence. Surely your original dentist should have back up copies of your files?

I agree with Luxuria. They may not have kept them from 1999 until now though but in 1999 they should have kept backups. If you explain the situation, your old dentist might be able to recomend someone in your new town to do the work. You also might try to call several dentists over the phone and ask if they would be willing to take your brackets off. You might offer to sign a statement that you will not hold them responsible for any damage caused by the brackets they are removing. I have been to new dentists who have treated the mistakes of other dentists without my files and it has never been a problem, so i think if you call around you might find someone willing to do it.
