*rant on*

It has now been 1 year and 27 days since I lost all my top teeth. I have not been able to wear my denture for more than an hour or so at a time. I eventually start gagging, and now recently started vomiting while trying to "get used to the feeling" as my dentist would say.

Now, the only positive I can find in my denture problems is that I have not given up yet. But over a year of gagging on a daily basis, and the last few weeks of vomiting on a daily basis; I can certainly say I'm ready to quit.

I guess I'm just not able to wear a denture.

Oh Willy I am so sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with your dentures and gagging. I too have a gagging issue but its not that bad.
Are these your permanent dentures? Have they tried to shave any off the back or is it at the point of losing all suction and you still cant stand it.

I was so lucky to have a dentist that allowed me to do adjustments with the dremel. I did it really slow and only took off tiny bits at a time. He said that he would prefer that they were longer to help with more suction but I told him I would rather use the glue and not gag. That was with the immediates that he gave me. I now a new set but they arent my permanant ones. They are longer and I do get the gagging sensation alot but it is getting better as the days go by. I am not allowed to take them out right now except for cleaning them and my mouth once a day, so I am beginning to get use to them more.

Have you checked into implants??? I have heard that they are now doing mini implants in the tops for dentures and the patients are doing great. Minis are half the price of regular implants. With implants they will cut out the roof part and you will only have the horseshoe shape like if you had bottoms. That would stop the gagging.

I wish I could give you a fix it so you could wear your upper teeth. I hope that you dont give up and you are welcome to vent any time you want. You are going through a really tough thing and it helps to vent.

It's not my permanent denture, but the dentists insists that I learn to wear these before he will make a permanent. Maybe it's time for a new dentist?

The dentist made it very clear that I was not to make any adjustments to them. He is even against the temporary relines that are available over the counter. The back as been shaved off all the way to the teeth. There is still a suction, although its not real strong, but I would be happy to use the glue if I could just keep them in my mouth.

Implants, I believe, are out of my financial league.

I may just find a new dentist and have a permanent denture made before I completely give up.

This may seem an odd suggestion, but I know a few people who have had success with gagging problems though hypnosis.

Though I do not yet have dentures, I have horrible enamel, and a horrible gag reflex that prevents me from doing adult-size x-rays (I'm 32 years old). I sympathize with the gagging problem.
