Smelly gums

My front lower gums seem to be receeding a little and when I rub them with my finger they smell really bad. None of my other gums are affected and I have no bleeding or swellings. Any ideas what it could be and can I buy medication over the counter in the UK to rectify this problem?

Re: Smelly gums

Hi Guys. 23 people have looked but nobody's suggested anything yet. Can any body offer any suggestions as to what I may have and if I need to see a dentist or is it something simple that can be cured with medication? I even tried applying neat Tea Tree oil but to no avail (Boy, does that stuff taste foul!)

Re: Smelly gums

hello, Well I will say I'm no expert, but I went thru that with my gums... And I have peridontol gum disease.... Two weeks ago I had all top teeth (which had no decay in them) removed and have a top denture now. I had let the disease go for years, and sure sorry I did. If I was you, I would go to the dentist ASAP, and see what can be done. Good luck to you, Betty

Re: Smelly gums

Thanks Betty. I absolutely hate going to the dentist and was hoping I could treat it myself but after what you've said it looks to be the sensible thing to do.

Re: Smelly gums

You're welcome. You may just need a good cleaning. I hate going to the dentist with a passion too. That's why I let it go. I didn't have pain or anything. But as the years went by my teeth got looser, and I started getting absesses under them and losing more and more teeth. And I was good about brushing and had decent teeth. There is a lot of things they can do to improve the health of your gums, and if it's just the front bottom, you may be in luck if it's caught now. And it may not be what I had, but I sure remember the smelly gums, and the receding got worse and worse. Best of luck! Betty

Re: Smelly gums

I second the idea of going to the dentist. Here in the states we have "sedation dentistry" for people who don't like dentists. They put you to sleep or in "twilight". Maybe you have that in the UK?
