I don't know why your dentist would tell you that. Even if the infection was mild (it sounds severe to me) you would still need antibiotics to treat it. More doctors, for good reason, are trying to limit writing prescriptions for antibiotics. Antibiotics have been abused by doctors and patients alike and the CDC is encouraging them to be more careful. However, when you have a legitamate need for an antibiotic, you need to get it. If you can't convince your dentist, then find another one. He says it's an infection. If it is, gargling with salt water will not 'cure' it. I'm all too familiar with dental pain and infections so my heart really goes out to you. I don't know of any pain worse than that. You need an antibiotic. Please keep me posted.
