Post Periodontal Surgery

Hello,

I recently had my first root canal and my dentist has informed me that I now need periodontal surgery because my gum is totally detached from my dead tooth. He said this will involve grafting skin from the roof of my mouth. This sounds very painful. I would like to know if anyone has had this procedure done. How long does it take? Thanks so much

Skin grafting can be a lttle painful for a few days but for the most part you will be fine,You are numb throuhout the procedure so you wont feel a thing and the roof of your mouth will feel as if you had a pizza burn for a few days. I have a question for you though, did he tell you this before you did the RCT and give you the details that if you had the RCT and not the skin graft that the tooth would not last to long anyway. He should have told you this.

Hi Bonnie,

Well, the dentist gave me alot of information that I didn't quite all absorb. He didn't say anything about me losing the tooth. He did say that before I had the RCT that I would probably need some gum work because he said that the gum was totally detached from the tooth. Are you saying that after all of this treatment that I may lose the tooth anyway? The dentist led me to believe that it will be fine and that at most may turn a bit brown in years to come. The tooth has also fallen a bit and he said this was due to the abcess. The tooth is also a bit loose.

Ok ,Im confussed now did you have the RCT first or the perio work first? The tooth will tighten up after the infection is cleared up from the RCt and the perio work. But yes there is always the chance that you can still loose the tooth ,but with proper homecare and regular dental check-ups they will be able to stay on top of any problems that arise and give it immediate attention
