Unhappy Pain after apicoectomy

I had an apicoectomy on 3 teeth (#9, 10, 11) 6 days ago. I am scheduled to go in to have stitches removed in 2 days. Yesterday, I started to feel new pain (most had already subsided from the procedure). The area to the left of my nose (a sinus cavity, I believe) is now swelling, and is painful to the touch, as well as just under my nose.

Typically, I don't take much pain medication after a dental procedure, but I have now depleted the Tylenol#3s the endo gave me. I have been trying to reach the endo, but he has not called yet. Can anyone tell me if this is possibly an infection from the procedure? The original procedure was necessary because of a cyst that developed after trauma to the mouth a couple of years ago.

Thanks for any insight you can give!

D

Re: Pain after apicoectomy

I am almost exactly in that situation now. I had my apico on 8,9,10 five days back. No pain at all and swelling is gone now. Got stitches removed 2 hours back.

Only problem is that yesterday and this morning, my lower teeth were feeling slightly sensitive. After removing stitches, the affected teeth are slightly sensitive; sensitive not to heat/cold but sensitivity triggered by nothing comes and goes by itself.

Did u ever experience that? Your experience would help me a lot.

I am having this problem now. I had my Apicoectomy on Tuesday. It is Saturday and the pain I have today is unbearable, also on the left side near my sinus.
I also have tried to reach my surgeon, and have yet to get a call back.
The pain is such like throbbing /shooting pain.
Does anyone here have any insight? I am really worried now..

Re: Pain after apicoectomy

I had the same problem after the apicoectomy on #14, only mine was developing fistulas (boils) above #13 a week and a half after the surgery. The oral surgeon did not give me any answers, I went to another surgeon after #1 wouldn't help. Mine was still infected and my insurance maxed. He sent me to another surgeon that subscribed to my health insurance (in case of any problems) to have it extracted. I still have that same ache, but it goes in cycles. I'm good for 2 or 3 days with slight pain and then it comes back for 2 or 3 days with not so nice pain. I had a sinus xray done when the boil part first started and that was okay. I'm going to an Endo on tuesday to have #15 & #13 checked out because it hurts the whole side when it kicks up, and I'm going to give him the whole history since the apicectomy. My xrays looked clear, and my regular dentist said it's possible it could be just taking a while to heal up. We'll see. I hope you guys get it sorted out. I've been trying to say it's my imagination, but when you wake up in the middle of the night, you know it isn't. After this xtravaganza, I've sworn off of root canals. Why avoid the inevitable in my case.

Re: Pain after apicoectomy

My surgeon finally called , I explained to him that my face/cheek was swollen up to my eye and I have this awful throbbing pain, he said It is probably now infected, and called in some Augmentin [antibiotic, for me. A gland under my jaw is very sore now as well(I had apico on top eye tooth) My eyes are totally bloodshot, this is creeping me out.. I started the Antibiotics ,I hope this is going to clear things. -I also hope to not scare others who may have to have an apico oneday..I just seem to have terrible luck with such things.-

@ sammeedog, thanks for the info about your experience. Can you explain the fistula part? I feel like these small bubble like things around the roof of my mouth and between the two teeth next to the one I had the Apico for.

Re: Pain after apicoectomy

A fistula is a boil. It looks like an oversized pimple, with a white head in the middle. It will either pop or ooze out white pasty stuff and/or bloods after the paste is gone. I only had one, that kept reappearing in the same spot, vs your small bumps.
Keep an eye on the bumps, it could be infection or it could be irritation. Don't mean to scare everybody. It was a "it happens" thing with my surgery. Things like that can happen with anything. My body just doesn't like apico's I guess. How bad was your infection before the apico, that could have something to do with it too. Mine was in bad shape, but for the longest time the xrays came up clear and I had no swelling, but when they opened it, it was bad.

Please refrain from using cuss/slang words. Thanks - Well-come Moderator.]

Re: Pain after apicoectomy

For what it's worth, I also had an apico done on my lower left bicuspid #2, for which I had a root canal done years ago, because I had a persistent cyst on my gum. Apparently, bacteria was leaking from the base of my root canal (possible crack?). The DDS gave me a 50/50 chance on the apico, which was done last April. It looks like it didn't take since the cyst re-appeared in Dec, 04. Now, the DDS says it's less than 25% chances of success if he re-performs the apico so he's suggesting tooth extraction and a dental implant.
He says the tooth looks strong and goes deep into the gums so it's unfortunate...but 'it happens'.
Before I get it yanked out, are there any other alternatives? I'm going to get a 2nd opinion but I'd like to go in educated so I can probe back.

Also, as for healing times, I recall I was sore and a little swollen/tender for a few days after the apico but after about a week, it returned back to normal.

Re: Pain after apicoectomy

If I were you, I would get it pulled as soon as possible. I had an apico and developed osteomyelitis (infection in the bone) and I'm not going through hell. I've been on IVs, hyperbaric oxygen treatments and had debridements and I'm still sick. I wish I had never had the apico and, in fact, I am thinking of suing the endo because she didn't pull it.

Poor Suezers, after I read your comments, I decide not to go for my apico on my #14 tooth. The 2nd oral surgeon suggests me just to pull the tooth out and go for implant, but I hesitated. That guy/oral surgeon also does implant (not a specialist on implant though),so I though he might just try to make more $$ from me, since most insurance do not cover implant. Thanks everybody for all the helpful comments. I'm NOT going to go for apico after my 2 rool canal surgeries.
