Tongue Discoloration - Dental Health Message Board

About two weeks ago, I noticed the back of my tongue had a strange blackish-brownish-dark greenish color to it. I was pretty grossed out, and brushed it, and it went away easily.

I didn't think about until this morning, when I woke up and the whole surface of my tongue was this color!

It's never happened before, that I've noticed, besides these two times. I can't pinpoint any food I ate that would have caused the discoloration, besides milk. Could milk be the cause of this all of a sudden, even if it's never given me problems in the past?

The only drug I'm on right now is Depo-provera, a contraceptive injection, for the last six months.

Help! This is weird!

See your dentist!

You need to be brushing your tongue thoroughly every day. You need to get more than just the tip of the tongue. Look into getting a tongue scaper, you can get these at just about any store that sells dental products. Use toothpaste for a fresher feel when cleaning. Things that can cause this discoloration are: coffee, tea, carmel colored soda pop, chocolate, and the list goes on. Again I recommend seeing your dentist, as this is not the place to seek treatment alternatives. Your dentist is the one that can look into your mouth an confirm your problem. Good Luck!
