Unexplainable gum pain-irritation - Dental Health Message Board

I have had a problem with gum irritation/pressure soreness for over a year now. I have had periodontists, rott canal dentists, dental college, oral surgeon and three regular dentists look at it. I have done all they recommended and it is no better. Problem is in the front on the bottom. Applying pressure, salt water, mouthwash makes it go away for very short time. I have removed bridge above that area as directed, had tooth pulled above area, had deep scaling done, had biopsy done by oral surgeon. That was negative. I am desperate...HELP

I suggest that you first talk to some of your family members. Find out if they have had dental problems like yours and what they did to treat it.

I think that a Water Pick would do you some good. It applies pressure and helps to toughen up your gums.

If you can afford it, ask your dentist for a perscription for Perodex. It is really powerful anticeptic mouthwash. It burns a bit until you are used to it but it works really well. It's even good for sore throats. The problem is that it cost more than twenty dollars a bottle if your insurance won't pay for it. Usually, they won't.

Whisky is the poor man's Perodex. After you clean your teeth in the evening, put a couple tablespoons of straight whiskey that has not been diluted into a glass. Then swish it around in your mouth for about two minutes and spit it out. (don't swallow it, that's a bad thing) It will probably burn like fire until your mouth thoughens up. If you must, it's OK to cut it with a lith water. But, try to get up to full strength as soon as you can.

Whiskey is mostly alcohol. It will toughen up your gums and prevent infections from setting in. Some people rinse with it a couple times a day. But, it's not a good idea to out into the public smelling like whiskey. At least Parodex smells like medicine.

Thank you for your suggestion, but I tried the mouthwash, use a waterpic and do the Vodka thing also. Warm salt water too. Need a cure!

It could be something as simple neuralgia. Try a warm compress a few times a day see if that helps.. It seems you have exhausted all the major areas that could have been a possible cause, so try it, what do you have to loose? Pain?

There is one more thing you could try. Go to your family physician and ask to have a bone scan done. If that has any abnormalities, they will do a second scan whieh is a nuclear medicine scan where they mix radioactive material with your white blood cells to see where they go to in your jawbone.

Sometimes gum pain can be from bone infection and these tests are not routinely done. They will tell you that if there was bone infection they could see it on xrays but that isn't always the case.

If that is ruled out, then can't a gum specialist do surgery on the area removing the inflamed gum tissue to see if new healthy tissue growing in solves the problem?
When doing an internet search i came across a picture of a periodontist removing inflamed tissue from the top of a woman's mouth after her dentures made the tissues red, painful, swollen and inflamed all the way across the top where her dentures went inside her mouth. That tissue was removed and new healthy tissue grew in solving the problem. Ask your peridontist what they can do about inflamed tissue. ALso, have they ever given you steroids to try for it?

If all of that fails, then I would see a neurologist to see if you have any nerve damage in that area.
