Question why are teeth rotting under silver fillings?

Sorry to post again, but I have so many questions! When I had my 6 silver fillings removed, he said their was a ton of decay underneath them which I guess is why he went so deep and hit the roots. Was there anything else he could have done? I go to a great dentist, or so I thought, and I get cleaned every 6 months. I'm only 26.

Why did that happen?
Is that common?
Why didn't it show up on x-rays?
Could it be that my teeth are allergic to metal?

Why did you have your six silver fillings removed?? Were they hurting you? Did he see something going on on the outside of your tooth? Did he see something on your x-ray? Or Did you just want to have white fillings?

Did the doctor recommend that they be removed, or was it just to get white fillings? I have a hard time believing that there was a ton of decay under those fillings, especially if you were not having any problems with them to begin with. This is why I asked why you were having them replaced in the first place.

Yes it should have shown up on the x-rays, as long as the x-rays were taken within a short period of time prior to the removal of these fillings. In otherwords, last years x-rays may not have shown this.

No there was nothing else he could have done, if there truely was a "Ton" of decay under the fillings.

Why did it happen? Which is going to cost you more? Six fillings, or 2 filling and 4 root canals with crowns??????

Hmmmm, if there was a ton if decay it should have shown up on the x-ray. Hmmmm, decay doesn't happen overnight. Possibly you've had the decay going on now for a while and now that the decay is closer to the nerve, NOW the doctor is going to step up and fix it for you, now that it means more money in his pocket.

You can get decay between the filling material and the tooth just like you had decay before you had the filling. This decay will travel along the wall of the filling and then spread out under the filling (the filling doesn't decay of course). This is quite common, and some people are more prone to decay then others. It will often not show up on xrays since the filling material will obscure it. Also unless a tooth has lost 1/2 its mineral content you can not see decay on an xray.

And no your teeth can NOT be allergic to metal, if you had any metal allergies they would be seen on the gum tissue/cheeks.. (thanks rhody for scaring another one).

Unhappy

Hi!About 3yrs.ago,I was awaken by pain in a tooth,so I
decided to go to the dentist. The dentist took so long
to see me,that when my turn came,he was talking about
savig my tooth. Now,I am so afraid of the dentist due to
past-problems that I was not interested in him saving
anything.I just wanted it out.Because he wanted to save it so bad,I really became scared.I was so scared
that my pressure went up to 160/130never had a problem
with high blood pressure.Always normal. He then sent me
to another dentist in the same building who also wanted
to save it but upon checking my pressure it had went
higher. The tooth never got treated,I wa givin a antibi-
octic and sent home. It's been 3yrs,now I'm even more
afraid then I was the first time.I had the pain off and
on took pain pills and got up enough nerve to go and
because of my pressure I was not treated. Now the same
toth along with others are causing me a great deal of
pain and I am still afraid to go,because I might not
get treated again.I also believe that there is a abcess
in my mouth at left side bottom.I don't no what to do
because I am allergic to penicillin, afraid of codeine,
percaset, percadan and an other drug that could cause
drowsiness.I am also afraid of being put to sleep due
to the pass. All I know is that I really must get this
infection out of my mouth.Havin a tooth extracted while
infected is very painful. So many people are telling me
that it can lead to death. Is this true?

awlsn-

Dentists are well-educated in dealing with oral infections and will be able to help you. I can tell that you are very frightened right now. Many people have intense fear of going to the dentist, and like you, have endured much pain because of it.
Best wishes.
