ongoing problem tooth - Dental Health Message Board

About three months ago I went to the dentist and was told I had a small cavitee on an upper tooth. the tooth already had one filling so I went ahead and had another filling put in. I have had pain and sensitivity every since and when I went back to the dentist all he did was shave it down a little. everytime I eat or drink something cold or hot (especially cold) i feel like someone is poking a needle right into the nerve. Dentist took an x-ray and said it looks ok. I'm wondering if it could be cracked becasue of the repeated work on it or if it will just take more time. The tooth did not hurt before going to the dentist and now I'm afraid I might need a root canel or extraction.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

i work for a dentist,and it really depends on how long ago you got your filling done. the tooth being sensitive to cold is normal, and can last for a couple of weeks. sometimes the nerve gets a little hyped up, and it just takes time for it to settle down. on the other hand if the filling was close to the nerve, there is always the chance you could end up needing endo. usually if there is a crack in a tooth you will feel pain when you either bite down, or pain when releasing. that would result in needing a crown to protect that tooth. hope maybe this might help you some.
