what is causing this? - Dental Health Message Board

I had a filling about 3 months ago and ever since when I drink something hot or cold it is very sensitive. I don't really feel any pain when biting down so I don't know if it could be cracked but I didn't think the sensitivity could last this long. the filling is the second in the tooth and is close to the nerve but the dentist says the nerve is protected. What can or should I do

Hi there! It sounds like your filling is pretty darn close to the nerve! The only thing that will help is if he re-dose the filling and put a material under the filling that is called IRM and it works sorta like an insulater from temperatures!

Do you know what IRM stands for? Also can they just put it under a filling or do they have to put the IRM in first and leave it there for say 3 months untill the nerve calms down and then redo filling with just amalgam?
