Is scaling painful? My gums are now appearing red, swollen and have some bleeding. I am now afraid to go to the dentist. I'm afraid he will want to pull all my teeth because of this. If you go to an oral surgeon for treatment does it usually help?
You need to go to a dentist for an evaluation. I dont think a dentist will automatically recommend having all of your teeth pulled. They try to save teeth. You will also most likely be recommended to a periodontist for your gums. They are gums specialists. If they say you need scaling then you should get it done. It is not painful. If you put it off you will need more serious "flap surgery." I put off going to a dentist and needed "flap surgery" and bone grafts, in order to save my teeth. An oral surgeon does not treat gum disease, they do extractions.
