Post Nerve Damage

My son was recently hit in the mouth by a baseball. His right front tooth and the one next to it was pushed back. The dentist straightened his teeth and attached a temporary brace to them. Last week, he took the brace off, but informed us that the teeth had nerve damage and were "dead". He now says they will require root canals.

1. Should he have checked for this nerve damage sooner, and could he have done anything about it?

2. Is nerve damage always permanent?

3. Is there any new technology/procedures to reverse nerve damage?

4. What are possible future problems?

Thanks.

If they are his permanent teeth, you may want to consider the root canal. My little guy jumped off the bed and landed on a rocking horse knocking his teeth back in the same way! The dentist didn't recommend having them pulled forward with the brace and root canal since they were baby teeth, but he did say that he would have suggested that course if they were his adult teeth.
