My mom had a toothache and went to the dentist, and there was no infection or anything, so the dentist gave her penicillin. The pain was at the bottom, but strangely, it moved to the top. She has also had headaches. Sometimes taking Tylenol helps. She has had her wisdom teeth out already. Has anyone ever experienced this, and does anyone know what could be wrong?

Hello, I was told many times I had no infection by yet i had pain.
After finding out my nerve was " going"
If she's till in pain I would have her go get a 2nd poinion. If the Dr didn't find any infection why Did he give her Med?

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your Mom's pain. Here's what I know from visiting an endodontist:
1) It's possible to have referred pain - ie. a tooth can cause pain on that side of the face.
2) An infection is only visible on the x-rays once it has spread from the tooth into the surrounding bone. So it is possible to have an infection/inflammation of the pulp (tooth's nerve) but have no signs on the x-ray.
3) If the pulp is infected, antibiotics are useless (they may reduce pain for a short period of time, but they don't cure it!).
I suggest your mom see another dentist or endodontist. Best of luck to her.

I have to agree. It sounds like she may need a root canal. It's amazing how one nerve can affect the entire mouth.

Good luck to your mom. Be sure that she sees a good endo.!
