If you're nervous about any aspect of the procedure, I'd highly recommend IV sedation. My oral surgeon gave me nitrous oxide first to make sure I was comfortable and not stressed out. Then after I was pretty relaxed, he put the IV in. I've had IV's before and this one was a piece of cake. Because of the gas, I didn't feel a thing. Then, after just a few seconds, I was completely in lala land. I woke up and my teeth were gone. I only had two out and they were fully erupted, but mine only took about 45 minutes total for everything.
At 40, I was terrified, but the gas and the IV made it VERY managable. Also, make sure you let them know you're apprehensive. My oral surgeon was great about it all.
