Dear Jenna,
Trust your dentist. These deep cleanings are to fight present gum disease. If it has been a long time since yuo had a cleaning, or you have extreme calculus build up it is neccesary. See a post "leave whole or have bridge put in" by Antoni. Look for my post that explains what happens with gum disease and you will undersatnd why these deep cleanings are important. And yes it can be expensive, it is hard work and you can expect to have sensitivity afterwards because the teeth have been covered up by calculus and after it is picked off it exposes root structure that normally would be protected by gum tissue. But if left untreated you could lose your teeth someday.

Jenna,
I tried to reply to your post in DENTAL PROBLEMS but my reply didn't seem to appear. I'll try here. I recently found a discount dental plan by doing a search for dental plans. It can get you a significant reduction in fees.
