Unhappy Lots of pain! Dentist isn't doing anything! Help

I went to the dentist yesterday after having a terrible toothache for 4 days now. They xrayed it and said they didn't see anything like an abcessed tooth or anything.

What she did find are some small cavities in between my teeth that need to be filled and one large old filling that needs to be replaced because it's trying to lift and part of that tooth on the back side of it is trying to break off.

She can't see me to take care of this until the 2nd week in Decemeber! I'm in some serious pain. I mean, I know there are people with alot more serious problems than mine, but toothaches hurt so bad.

I've only been to this office a few times and I've never been real crazy about them. The office staff is nice but the DDS just isn't what I think she needs to be.

When I had my teeth cleaned a few months ago, the hygenist did it and everything is recorded and stored in a computer database. The xrays are all compuerized. All hi tech stuff which is fine. I don't have a problem with that.

I just can't wait until December. I need relief now. Tylenol and Motrin aren't helping. I can't chew on that side without lancing pain that goes to a steady dull ache.

I'm considering changing dentists. Not to be mean about it, but I took off work early yesterday and nobody did anything but xray it, tell me what's most likely causing the pain and tell me I can't see you until December. I can't wait that long.

I'm already petrified of the dentist as it is. It took me months to even get them cleaned!

Any suggestions? What can I do in the mean time to ease my pain and should I change dentists? I can understand that people are busy. I can understand that it can take time to get in and be seen about a problem, but I don't understand having to wait soooo long when I've been hurting for days. When she tapped on the teeth to figure out which one was really hurting before looking at the xrays, it hurt so bad.

What should I do?

Also, if the filling has to be replaced will it hurt? I haven't had a filling done since I was a teenager. This one's lasted that long. Will it hurt afterwards?

I need alot of work done with the fillings and stuff. I just don't know what to expect afterwards is all.

Thanks!

Hi Kortney

I have also had bad dental pain and found that a soluble painkiller containing paracetomal and codeine works best for me. I have just found a new dentist (my 3rd in 2 years) and to be honest if you have any doubts about your treatment i would make an appointment with a different dentist and get a second opinion as i have done. Explain everything including how anxious you feel and hopefully you will get things resolved quickly . I wish you luck and i hope you get sorted out quick , nothing is worse than dental pain plus the anxiety as well.Kind regards

I totally agree with the above posts. I changed dentists two years ago for the above problem. The dentist I went to had such poor org. skills, it took over 2 months to get into see him if there was a problem.

I'll tell you what happned to me. My right top wisdom tooth had broked off was causing pain and was cutting my cheek, I'd had a good relationship with this dentist so far so I called the office. I told his office staff that my wisdom tooth had broke off and was cutting my cheek and causing lots of pain, and needs to be pulled. Well they said I needed a crown on the tooth(I think not) and I continued to tell them that it was a wisdom tooth, she didn't believe me and scheduled me an appointment for two months later. I didn't go,and didn't call them to cancel it either.

Any how, I called another dentist the same day, mind you I had never seen this dentist before, and he got me in two days later. He looked at the tooth, and sent me to an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon got me in 4 days later and pulled the tooth. I've been with my new dentist for 2 years and am really happy with him.

After talking to different people who went to my previous dentist, they had similiar problems. Several people I know, no longer go to dentist I was telling you about.

My point is that, if can't get into see this dentist, go to a different one. There are plenty of good dentists out there that will listen to you and help you with your pain. Good luck and keep us posted

Heather
