Unhappy Pain Between Root Canal Treatments

Has anyone had this experience? I went to the dentist to get one of my molars pulled on the upper right side of my mouth. I had a dull toothache for about a week and I wanted the dentist to pull it. So I went this past Thursday to have it pulled and he said he was not going to pull the tooth. He thought I should save it and said he was going to do a root canal. So he proceeded on doing the root canal. He said he pulled all the nerves out and to come back in about two weeks and he would fill it. I already have a crown on this tooth. He said I would have no more pain in this tooth because he pulled all the nerve tissue out. Well it is Saturday night and that tooth is acheing a little and when I put my tongue over the hole in my tooth it HURTS. Is it possible that he did not get all the nerve tissue out? When I suck on the tooth it has a horrible odor and taste. If he did not get all the nerve will it die before I go back and complete the root canal. This is my first root canal and if they are all like this I would rather they pull the tooth.
Any suggestions on why my toothache is coming back. The bad part is the dentist is on vacation until after Thanksgiving.

Root canals that I've had usually hurt or are sore for a couple of days, depending on how bad the tooth was before the procedure. It has something to do with the connective tissue attached to the tooth, I've been told Sometimes, I have a wierd taste for a couple days after too, but more wierd than bad. Sometimes when I would rub my tongue over the tooth, I would have a sharp, quick pain, but it was gone by the time the tooth was finished.

It sounds like there's a possibility some infectious tissue might have been left behind. I know when the dentist opened my last tooth(for a retreatment and I had a crown too)the smell was pretty foul from the infection.

Thanks chica loca,

I hope the pain goes away. It is a little better today. I just avoid eating on that side of my mouth and I keep my tongue away also. I cannot stand the pain. Thanks for your reply. I feel better that someone else has experienced what Im going through.

I have had 8 root canals in my life with crowns put on each tooth. I have always been told by dentists that you should save your teeth. I trusted them. However, I don't trust them anymore. I've been "informed." I strongly encourage everyone to read the book "Uninformed Consent." We are making decisions based on ignorance. At least I did. The truth is, no dentist can get all of the dead nerve tissue out when doing a root canal. What about the accessary roots that come off the main nerve root in a tooth. You can't even see those in x-ray. Bacteria will always be there. So you have a low grade infection from that day on. Heck I've got a file brocken off in one of my nerve roots. And the dentists are taught that is safe. Common sense tells me it's not safe. Not to mention the fact that tooth hurt until I finally had it pulled. I say, "please inform yourself." If I knew then what I know now, I would have made different decisions on treatment. Please remember this. Dentists only know what they were taught at school. If you'll read that book I promise it will open your eyes a bunch! Good luck to all.
