Well theoretically it seems to make sense that anything blocking air from crossing an exposed gap would be helpful, but denture adhesives also rub off and dissolve. Granted, they don't do it easily and are pretty sticky, mostly getting on your tongue and roof of your mouth where it's almost impossible to remove it from!
They also make stuff like anbesol in a paste form (along with the liquid form), that does the same thing, but delivers an anesthetic. So it would be used for a situation like yours, where the tooth has a hole in it, something near the gumline.
It's tough with top teeth though because a lot of preparations fall off easily, even if you don't talk or eat or drink anything, just from the natural action of your tongue in your mouth.
