Question Were you given antibiotics before extractions?

I'm wondering whether or not it is common practice to be given antibiotics when you are having several teeth pulled.

I will be getting an upper denture next month and think I would prefer to be given antibiotics. I know doctors certainly don't hand them out as routinely as they did in the past. However, I haven't been on them for many years and I know I would feel more comfortable having so many teeth (12) pulled if I was on antibiotics.

Were you given antibiotics for your extractions?

Thanks.

I was told I'd get antibiotics for a few days after the extractions. From what i was told, I understood this to be common practice.

I believe I'm getting some before as well, but this is only because I have Mitral valve prolapse.
I don't think most people get antibiotics before.

I'm getting one more tooth yanked than you are.
Scared to DEATH.

What options are you getting on your parcial?
Or is it a full plate?

Are you gonna have to go without teeth for 2 months like me? I was under the impression that it was because I was getting a parcial and not a full plate.
So I guess it's harder, if not impossible to get some sort of temporary thing put in right away like the full plate people??
No idea here... :/

I was given antibiotics before my extractions because I had a very bad infection that caused me to be sick for months on end.
After the extractions, they told me no antibiotics were needed, although had heard it was common to get them after oral surgery. My oral surgeon did some major cleaning when I was 'under', and said with having a full mouth extraction done, along with the cleaning she did, there was no need for antibiotics. She said the teeth were causing the infection, and with those gone, the infection would be too.

To date, I have had no problems with not taking meds after surgery. No infection at all.

Talk to your dentist about meds after extraction. Let him/her know your concerns and see what they say. You may not need anything, although I know most people do get prescribed something...it wasn't the case for me.

Good luck to you...

I was offered antibiotics until I told the oral surgeon that I had just had a course of Clindamyacin a few weeks prior. He told me that Clindamyacin was one of the strongest antibiotics and that if I took more it would be overkill. He said that the antibiotic stays within the system for several months, but if I still wanted them he would give them to me. I turned them down. I think that if you are prone to infection that they will offer the antibiotics, if not then they tend to be skittish about it.

Scardycat - I did read somewhere that anyone with heart valve problems should definately get antiobiotics when having dental work. I don't have valve problems, but would still feel better if I was taking them......I will be getting a full upper plate, as opposed to a partial, so my plate will be put in as soon as I have the extractions. That is crummy that you will have to go without a bunch of teeth for 2 months!!! I noticed you said that you will be getting one more extraction than me - but that you are only getting a partial. Does that mean you are only keeping 2 of your natural teeth?

Scaredstiff - Strange. I would think that since you had an infection and then had your teeth pulled, that they would definately want you to be on the antibiotics 'after' having the extractions. Glad it worked out okay for you.

Mary - I didn't know that antibiotics stayed in the system for so long. Interesting.

Thanks you guys. I appreciated you responding.
