Gum pain and swelling in centralized areas - Dental Health Message Board

Hi, I'm posting for my wife who over the last several days is in severe pain due to her gums swelling in centralized areas. The puffiness looks almost bulbous and seems to be filled with fluid. Strange thing is, these swollen areas take about 2 days to decrease and go away then ANOTHER will appear in a different area. Also, she has tried icing the areas to no avail. Here is some background info: My wife is 5 weeks pregnant and is on these current medications (as per her physician): Baby aspirin (1 daily), prenatal multi-vitamin (1 daily), folic acid supplement (4 daily), progesterone (alternating oil injections and suppositories), Glucophage (1 daily @ 500mg.) My initial inclination is that this is some sort of reaction to the medications/supplements she is taking. Because of the movement (not spreading) of the absesses from one location to another, I didn't think of it as an infection. Also, she does not recall if these are actually draining or just slowly unswelling. At this point she is desperate for advice and is at the point of taking a needle to her gums to drain it herself!

This is coupled with her fear of tking any medication or treatment while she is pregnant. Please, if anyone has any advice or guidance, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone for their valuable time.

Hi- this could be, as you say, a reaction of some kind to the meds, or perhaps some hormonal issue.

I would first talk to her physician who may have an immediate answer for you. If not, have her see a dentist or a periodontist .

And for god's sake tell your wife NOT to drain it with a needle heself (!) If there is an infectious process going on, this cannot be a great idea! Although clear fluid doesn't sound like infection but more like some kind of allergic reaction and the clear serum that is coming out sounds more like an inflammatory response to something.

Again, see a dentist ASAP.
