Question Yos...a lower denture question

Hi Yos,

I was wondering what your thoughts were on this...
You know the problems I am having with my lower denture, and how hard it is for me to keep it from floating, whether I'm eating or not.
It just ocurred to me that maybe it's because my gums have shrunk so much, therefore, making the denture too bulky in my mouth?? I noticed that when I open my mouth to eat, and the tongue comes forward, it's the muscles below my tongue that are causing the denture to pop up. I hate to admit it, but, I don't remember if this was a problem from the start, as I really didn't pay attention to "why" they were loose, I just knew they were and I hated it!
Although it still doesn't explain why the lower front isn't sitting on my gums the way it should, it would explain why I cannot take a bite of food without losing my teeth http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Whenever I move my tongue, no matter what direction, the lowers pop up and out. Any thoughts on this?

Btw, did you try to Denturite?

And congrats on quitting smoking!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/t_up.gif I wish I had the willpower to do it too. My mind just isn't ready yet.

Smiles

Hi Scaredstiff

Thanks for the congrats. I quit by using the patch It's also important that you really want to quit so no sense in trying unless you are ready.

No, haven't used the Denturite yet. I felt a small "abraision" on my gum under the lower denture a couple of days ago. It doesn't (didn't) hurt and I discovered it by accident. I'm not even sure if it was caused by the denture because other than being able to feel it with my tongue I can't feel it at all. I'm seeing my dentist about it tomorrow.

About the lower, your guess is as good as mine. It could be that the denture is too long on the back side of the gums. At the same time it could be because the gums have shrunk and the denture sits back further. Without a doubt, that the denture floats makes it easier to knock off. More likely, it's a combination of everything. Even with the anchors and good fit of my denture I still manage to dislodge it. It doesn't happen often but it could make for an awkward situation when eating in a restaurant. That's one of the reason's why I want to try the Denturite. I never had that problem when I had the soft reline. I'm hoping the Denturite will grip my gums better than the bare denture material, something like wearing gloves.

Anyway, I think knocking the denture is something that will probably resolve itself over time. It could happen after your next soft reline when the denture fits more snug. It may not be a problem at all after a hard reline and the denture itself is less bulky. The muscles at the bottom of the gums are still learning to adjust to the denture being there too. It's all part of the patience thing. It's an inconvenience but at least it isn't painful. In the meantime, you could ask your dentist to shorten the back when you see him next but I expect he'll be reluctant to do it. Still, a silly little millimeter can make a big difference and it can be added again when you have a hard reline. I was going to ask my dentist to shorten mine in the back but I was afraid that it would make it easier for food to get up and under the denture. It seems that whatever is done to a denture there is some kind of trade-off or comprimise

I've probalby given you more to think about than provide any answers. I hope it helped in some small way.

Yos

You might have some bone resorption going on. Go see your dentist and have it checked soon.

Superfighter

In the second paragraph, last line, I say "I'm seeing my dentist about it tomorrow".
