Ok, here's my situation. I had my two lower wisdom teeth extracted. Immediately following this treatment, I noticed a feeling of "pins and needles" in my lower left jaw and my lower left lip. I immediately called the dentist who said that during the procedure, he disturbed a nerve and the nerve tip broke off. He did recover this nerve tip. I was told that this side effect of the treatment was very rare and that this is the first time he ever caused this problem. He did diagnose it as parathesis. He said it would either get better within six months or it wouldnt. Well, its now ten months and there is no improvement whatsoever. I did an extensive search of the internet and read up on it. There is essentially no treatment that I can find short of microsurgery on the actual nerve which would require entering the nerve channel by cutting into my cheek tissue, cutting into bone, and digging around to find the damaged nerve. That is not an option. Apparently that is the only treatment and it is expensive, experimental, and risky. However, I just found this message board and have searched messages for the past 75 days with the result being I read about ten posts that sounds like the person has parathesis but I havent found any direct posts on this diagnosis. Thus, my request is as follows...if anyone has been diagnosed with parathesis could you please post in this thread with feedback provided on your symptoms, treatment provided, treatment options/ideas, and the course of the illness (e.g., did it get better, get worse, stay the same, or what). I would really like to hear if anyone else has this problem, how you feel about it, what it feels like to you, and treatment options you have discovered from reading on the net or by Rx from your dental care provider. I just want to also say to anyone who is reading this post...I know the problem is not life threatening and doesnt pose a serious handicap that impairs my function in key areas. However, it is very distracting, is mildly painful, everytime I touch my jaw or lip...the nerves fire off these weird uncomfortable sensations...and I feel this about a hundred times a day...every time I take a drink of water or eat or touch my upper lip to my bottom lip, when I lick my lips. Its irritating and constantly bothersome. The worst thing is...I used to really enjoy kissing...passionate kissing...and now...well...let's just say...it really is no longer enjoyable because any feelings of pleasure are overwhelmed by this pin and needles feeling. Yep, loosing the pleasure of kissing...for me...that's the worst part of it. Ok, enough said. Any further posts from fellow sufferers and treatment ideas (if any) would be greatly appreciated. Finally, I will close by saying...I havent given up on fixing this problem. I havent accepted it as a life long problem yet. I have an appointment with an accupunture doctor and I have a feeling that its going to help me. We will see. So long. Hope to hear from someone.
Hi, its me again. I want to post the following URL which is the best web site I've seen devoted to the condition known as parathesis and its treatment options (traditional medicine and alternative medicine). I think its a valuable resource for anyone searching for info on this condition. But I would still like to see posts from those who may be experiencing this condition. Thank you very much.

Similar problem but after implant. It has been three years. Same complaints as you. What's the use!! Have you had any luck with alternative methods? Pretty disgusted. The doctor said he has only had 2 patients in his entire practice that this has happened to. Unfortunately, I am one. This kissing part is a bummer.

I, too, am experiencing the same pins and needles tingling feeling in my chin, cheek and a little bit in my lower lip. My oral surgeon told me that it's bruised and it will heal anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. But, like your dentist, said that by 6 months I essentially am stuck with whatever sensations I have. This is disconcerting as I don't want to be left permanently numb and tingling because it is very uncomfortable and distracting. I've tried painkillers and they seem not to work. I had them taken out in 9/9/05. Basically, the OS said to wait and see. My concern is that I've read about people who, like the 1st person who posted, still have the numbness/tingling after several months. I have an appointment to visit a nerve surgeon in San Francisco, named Dr. Tony Pogrell. He's supposed to be the best in California. Let's hope and pray it all goes well. It's an initial consult and I'm sure that what he says about the cost will be astronomical. Do I take the risk of another surgery or risk being numb the rest of my life? I just hope it heals and normal feeling returns to the chin and lip.
Does anyone have an update on the effectiveness of acupuncture on parathesis? I still have parathesis nearly four years after having a dental implant. Help!!
