Post Is this normal for Root Canal?

My husband had a root canal done back in March on tooth #2. He has been still having pain and went back into the dentist for them to do another x-ray and find out they left a piece of the metal instrument (I believe they called it a file)used to do his root canal in March. The dentist told us this happens all the time not to worry. Anyone have any opinions on this? Thanks

Was the root canal done by a general dentist or an endodontist? If the tooth is still painful I think it might be time for a second opinion from an endodontist. If a canal was missed during the first root canal, then that may be the source of the pain.

Good luck

Hi and welcome to the boards!

Am I hearing you right, are you saying they left a piece of the file in the tooth, and then sealed it up?

Yes, the general dentist left a piece of the insturment in his tooth and sealed it up. We found this out after they referred him to an endodontist because he was still having pain. The endodontist is a great guy but he wants to do everything "politically correct" so to speak and he won't really say to much since it was done by another dentist. We called the original dentist and told them what they found and they said this happens all the time not to worry. Well to make a long, long story short. We are having a review board with our insurance look over the case because we have reason to believe they did a root canal on the wrong tooth to begin with. It should have been the tooth next to it which he has since had a root canal on and everything is fine now. I'm basically just trying to figure out what else the original dentist screwed up on. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Teryl
