Question cross bite questions

I was told that both my kids (6 & 8 yrs. old) have terrible bites and that their lower jaw is larger than the top jaw. The dentist talked about moving the bones with "soft appliances" whatever that is, and wearing some kind of head sling at night when they sleep. Has anyone ever had this done? Is it uncomfortable? What would happen if we don't do this? The dentist said that they would have very prominent lower jaws as adults and would need surgery to correct. I can imagine what fun it would be to put these contraptions on my kids! I'm also afraid of someone moving the bones around and will make sure this guy knows what he is doing! If anyone has any information on cross-bites or under-bites, please let me know.
Tracy

Hey-I have a crossbite and never got it corrected. I developed tmj and now my upper jaw is smaller than the lower one and my lower jaw juts out. not exactly aesthetically pleasing. I wish I'd had it fixed when I was young. Early treatment is essential for crossbites so that the face grows more normally. Crossbites also make it difficult to eat sometimes, i notice. Asdk the opinion of another orthodontist maye but i think he may be right.
Hope this helps,
Ladida
