New Lower Denture - Dental Health Message Board

I just had my last 8 bottom teeth extracted and was supposed to get my immediate lower denture the same day. Guess what? It didn't fit at all. The dentist had taken impressions a few weeks before when I still had teeth but said that's normal procedure when you get an immediate denture. The denture would not fit correctly over the gum ridge line and was crooked. He had the lab remake it......in fact, he took new impressions since I now had no lower teeth. Today I went back and it still isn't right. Would not sit right in my mouth. Dentist is perplexed why this happening. He took more new impressions, bite impressions, and some others too. I am very upset about the whole situation, tired of soft foods, and wonder if I'll ever get a good fitting denture. I know lower dentures are usually a problem but I figured adhesive would keep it stable. At this point, it just won't fit over the gum ridge at all. Monday, the lab will pick up the denture and the new impressions to try again. Has anyone else had this problem?

Lower dentures can be very difficult. Immediate dentures are especially difficult because they can not be made to exactly what your gums would be like without the teeth. They are just a guestimate. Done by the lab taking off the teeth that you have and setting the teeth where they once were. Sometimes, they fit great, and sometimes, they don't fit so well. Most have to be delined (the interior taken out and more acrylic added) six months after your ridges heal anyways. If you are really unhappy with the movement of the lower dentures (they tend to slide around a lot) you can get implants placed that will attach to the denture (underneath the denture- not visible) to stabilize it. Of course, this depends on a consultation to make sure that you have enough bone left, and everything like that.... Hope that helps....

It's not that they don't fit right; they don't fit in my mouth at all! I don't know whether the dental lab is screwing up or what. My dentist has taken so many new impressions that I'm hoping the lab gets it right the next time around. I know all the pitfalls about lower dentures not being as stable as uppers and was fully aware that I would have to use adhesive to keep the lower denture in. My dentist already told me I'm a good candidate for implants due to my bone structure.
