Dentures?

Since I may end up having to get dentures I have a few questions. What is the price range for them? How long do you have to wait after having your teeth removed before wearing them? How long does it take to get use to wearing them? Do they stay pretty secure in the mouth? Do they make dentures without the roof area of the mouth (I have a bad gag reflex towards the back of the roof of my mouth)? Do they cause a change in the shape of your face compared to your normal teeth (I have very thin cheeks)? Are they noticeable that you have dentures in? How long do dentures usually last before you need a new pair?

Are implant dentures better than normal ones?

Hi irishclover
The price range is different depending where you go.You can have an immediate denture made and placed as soon as you have the extractions, which is what I did.As far as getting used to them,I guess it's different for each person,I have had mine for 8 wks and I'm still not used to them, but I have never had one minutes trouble with them, and I'm hoping I will be used to them before long. I have no pain or anything,it's just I'm always aware of them. When you first get an imediate denture it is tight and as your gums heal, they will become loose in most cases and you have to get a soft reline.I have been lucky and have never needed a reline at all.I know by reading though, that most people do.yes, they do make dentures without the roof area in them.you have something called implant posts, which are inserted in the jawbone and a denture snaps on to these posts eliminating the need for the roof area.also there is something else I think, but I forget what it is lol.A denture shouldnt change the look of your face--mine didnt. They look just like my real teeth did and no one even knows I have them, unless I tell them.I hope I have helped in some small way--good luck to you in your dental adventure.
hugs
Rita

This is something I have been wondering too--wondering if they would be easier to get used to.I may look in to them in the future if I cant get used to the regular denture

Re: Dentures?

Hi
I had my extractions and implants put in (on top) on May16. The dentist put 4 implants in and I was supposed to go back for 2 more implants 2 weeks later. I don't know why he did it that way. Or if it is the normal way they do implants. But I am having a problem with 2 of the implants. They are very loose and can not be used. So my immediate dentures are only attached to the other 2 implants right now. Apparently the bone is not holding the other 2. I don't know what the dentists intends to do about it. He wants me to go back in 4 weeks and he will check on them. I still need the last two implants to be put in. I have no idea what the dentist will be doing. I am worried that maybe my bone is not strong enough for the other inplants. So that's somethimg to keep in mind about getting implants. Make sure your bones are good and strong.
I'm beginning to have second thoughts about this dentist. He should have checked my bones before he sold me the implants. I am thinking that when he noticed that 2 implants were lose after 1 week, he should have x-rays them to see what was going on with the bone. But he just told me to come back in 4 weeks. I used Affordable Dentures and I heard that they were good. Now I am thinking that you get what you pay for. I guess that's something else to keep in mind.
I'll keep everyone updated about the implants.

Re: Dentures?

Hi Irishclover. I have had 5 extractions and upper immediate denture in for 8 weeks now with no problems at all. The first week I cried because they felt like I had a truck in my mouth and I thought I would never get used to them. Lo and behold here it is 8 weeks and no problems. Just had my first reline last week. I eat everything now and they are very comfortable. I did not have any problem with gagging. Hope this helps.

Janice
