Question Wear retainer after wisdom teeth extractions...

I wore braces many years ago and I failed to get my wisdom teeth extracted after my braces were removed. I recently had to get my wisdom teeth extracted because 2 were impacted and some overcrowding. One of my top front teeth has slightly shifted a little outward. I've read on other threads that it's possible that the teeth may continue to shift after teeth extractions. I have been feeling a little pain on some of the teeth that were close to the surgery, could that be because they might be shifting and could a retainer be the solution from preventing this and maybe moving the tooth back ...would my same old retainer be safe to wear?
