Questions about bone graft for implant - Dental Health Message Board

Hi everybody,

I need to have a bone graft done due to bone loss, and I was offered 2 options - using a fragment of my own jaw bone, or use artificial bone (it looks like it is in part at least cadaver bone). The latter is easier as there is no extra surgery to remove the necessary bone, but I'm not sure if it's also safe and as durable in the long term.

I also need a sinus lift in the same spot, and I was told of a new procedure called "hidraulic sinus lift". Anybody knows anything about this?

My daughter had bone grafting done with the cadaver bones. It wasn't for implant purposes, though. She had 2 teeth removed and when they removed them, they found a hole in her jaw. They did the grafting and she hasn't had any problems at all.

When I had my implants removed a few months ago the bone graft used to fill the holes was synthetic - I had heard, and thankfully so did the surgeon, that some contaminted bone (I think with HIV) used in dental grafts had been erroneously included in distribution or circulated. Not sure how valid the story was but I did not want to take any chances and he readily agreed.
