complication after widsom teeth extraction - Dental Health Message Board

I had two widsom teeth extracted in April and there was no problem for three months, but since last month my right side gum started to swell. For the first treatment the oral surgeon removed disturbed tissue and cleaned the infected area. After one week the gum was still tender so I was subscribed on Amoxicillin for ten days. It did not work, so 8 days after I started to take antibiotic, I had another surgery, this time I was given laughing gas and the gum was aggressively cleaned. The surgeon did not want to subscribe another antibiotic.

Now ten days after the second surgery the infection is back and my gum is swollen. I was rinsing my mouth every 2~4 hours everyday(while not sleeping) with mouthwash but it did not help. I am so worried about bone infection and loss of teeth. Why the surgeon was so reluctant to give me antibiotic?

I am going to make an appointment again but is there any thing that I can do to make things better?

Good question, they should try another round of antibiotics or maybe a different type of antibiotic. There is also an antibiotic rinse of which the name escape me at the moment. An oral sugeon my not be aware of this. Oh! Peridex is one thats available. Usually prescribed to people with gum disease to fight off bacteria. I would think that your regular dentist or a gum specialist would have more knowledge in treating these types of infections, so that would be a good place to start. A visit to the periodontist (gums) will require a referal so start with your general dentist first. Good Luck and try somehow to reduce stress since it is proven to hinder the immune system.

Thank you! I have to wait to see my surgeon until Friday (he is booked!!)... I hope the gum will be cured very soon! I will mention the mouth wash to him! He will decide taking antibiotic orally is better or not.
