question about implants - Dental Health Message Board

When they prepare the mouth for implants can they just give you pain killing shots because I am unable to take codeine derivatives (causes panic attack) and scared of the words "iv sedation" I have seen posted here and what it might mean. I have had teeth extracted after just receiving the usual pain killer shots, will they be able to do that

When I had my implants put in last month they gave me the shots of novicane. You should be ok as long as you can take those shots.

yes i am fine with those, thanks for responding. I have had so many questions regarding implants and I appreciate getting these responses. I had a surgical procedure done where they lower (cut away) the gumline in order to replace crowns and I had no problem with novacaine for that vs sedation plus I didn't take the heavy duty painkiller afterward because of the codeine in it and I did fine with high dose of advil instead. They did give me something else for inflammation and I took that for a day or two also.

I had all my teeth pulled plus 4 very impacted wisdom teeth that refused to budge, implants placed and my teeth attached in a 6 hour surgery all with just novacaine (called "teeth in a day"). I would do it again in a heart beat as it did NOT hurt. At the end I knew that I would be in pain when leaving so I asked for a couple of more shots to numb me. My prosthodontist stitched me so tightly I had no complications from dry sockets or anything.

I can't take codine either so they gave me darvocet which I requested instead of vicodin, motrin 600 mg, I had a prescription for steroids, antibiotics, a prescription mouth rinse. I didn't swell terribly because of the steroids but did bruise some but it was more from the wisdom teeth than the implants.

Thank you so much for your kind response. I appreciate it as I have so many concerns about getting implants but thanks to people responding I am feeling more comfortable them. A friend today told me her sister has a terrible infection from implants and that ws not something I wanted to hear, wonderinf if that is unusual. I remember when I had root canals done I was very worried (had also read about health implications) but I had absolutely no problems and was glad I had them done :_) Thank you again :_)
