silver vs white fillings

I've read some bad stuff about the white ones.....I've always had silver because my dentist told me they're the best. My dentist retired and now my new dentist wanted to replace a silver filling with a white one, and fill a new cavity with a white one. From what I've read here, the white ones have some serious problems...... I already have sensitivity and don't want any more. I've asked the dentist to do silver instead and she said she will, but they usually do the white ones. Now I'm wondering if she may be better skilled with the white ones vs the silver ones. I realize a lot of the outcome depends on the skill of the dentist....not just the material. They do more white ones. Now I'm wondering if I did the right thing by asking her to do silver. My appt is in about 3 weeks, so I have a little more time to think about it. I'd like everyones opinions to which ones are better and why.
Thanks!

Re: silver vs white fillings

Hi - My daughter, who lives in Seattle, always has white fillings and thinks they are the best. However, my dentist insists that silver fillings last a lot longer. If you have confidence in this dentist (have you had work done on your teeth by him in the past?), then, if he/she says white fillings are just as strong and durable as the silver, you can be confident that he will do a good job. I was worried that the silver fillings had mercury in them, which many people believe causes all kinds of problems. Still, my dentist convinced me to have the silver. Hard to know who to believe, I realize! As I said if he/she is a competent dentist, then either one should be easy for him to do.

Re: silver vs white fillings

well I'm not sure if I have confidence in the new dentist. my dentist retired and referred all his patients to a new dentist, a woman. I went there for a cleaning and exam and everything looked nice, high tech, etc. I was impressed. I've never had her do any work on me. That was the first time I saw her. I was with my other dentist for over 30 years and trusted him. I hate change, especially with dentists and doctors! I have no idea about this new one, I can only hope that she's good, and she seems to be.
The last time I went to the old dentist, he had to do a filling and asked me what I want and I said which one is better and he said silver, so I said silver.....LOL

Re: silver vs white fillings

Well, sounds as if it's settled! because we agree Seriously, I have been going to my dentist for 20 years, and I have great faith in him. I questioned him about the silver fillings because of the mercury; but he convinced me that the mercury in them is nil and that they are the best. Your dentist would have only recommended someone he felt he could trust with his practice.
