Bonding to fix a few crooked teeth?!
 

Hi! I have a question about cosmetic dentistry. you see, i never had
braces (my teeth were always perfectly straight), but as i've gotten older, one
of my teeth on the bottom started to shift slightly and was about 1/32 of an
inch crooked. I know... not much. You still couldn't see it unless you looked like directly into my
mouth, when it was open, directly from the top, but for whatever reason, i went
to an orthodontist anyway. he told me that my teeth would get much worse and i
needed to do something quickly. he was WRONG!!! he convinced me to get the
"red, white, & blue" invisible braces, which are like invisalign, only wayyyy
thicker, more visible, and a terrible product on a whole. the day that i got
them, they were a completely different product than the ones he showed me (they
were thick and yellow, not to mention COMPLETELY visible and they were extremely
difficult to talk with.. worse than mouth-guards). I would have, at that point, told him that i no longer
wanted them, but he filed down all my teeth first to "make room" so there
wouldn't be crowding on the bottom, so i had no choice... i had HUGE gaps
between all my teeth on the bottom. He also told me that I had to get them on
the top too, for some odd reason (my top teeth were absolutely perfect). After
trying for months to wear them (I'd still only do it at night because they were
so noticeable and i couldn't talk), i just stopped, and since, my teeth have
gone haywire. they were all loose, got more crooked than before, and i'm
absolutely horrified at what he did. He filed down the sides of my teeth so
much that I have CONSTANT sensitivity. my dentist said that the spaces are now
"food traps". :'-( i never went back to that stupid orthadontist again.

NOW PLEASE, this is my question!!! would porcelain veneers or bonding be a good option for
me? Just on a few of my teeth that he totally ruined. I can't stand the
sensitivity any longer (do i need a root canal?), and there's no way that i'm
getting metal braces. thank you so much!

Hi there, I had veneers put on my teeth and I love them. The first time I just had them bonded, but that does not last as long and you have to have them redone about every 10 years or sooner. This time I got veneers and they should last at least 20 years, it all depends on how well you treat them, like what food you might bite into that is hard to bite, that sometimes ruins them, so you just have to be careful, and the good thing is, they don't turn yellow, so if you are a coffee drinker, that will not stain them thank god, because I love coffee. Can't believe that dentist did that to you, that guy should be paying for what you have to correct now. Hope this is of some help!

Wow, thank you so much! That was really informative and helpful! The fact that they don't stain is music to my ears because I'm a huge coffee-drinker too! I think that I'm going to go with the bonding, just because the defects in my teeth aren't severe enough where I'd need to cover the entire tooth... or at least i don't think so (I'll see what the dentist says). I was wondering though, can you get the bonding material put on ALL of your teeth just for the sake of whitening? I mean like a thin coat of the plastic stuff? I would like that because I have fever spots on my teeth from when I was younger (that's like little white spots on my teeth). This makes the rest of my teeth look really discolored by comparison, just because these spots are as white as can be! :mad: I've tried at home bleaching (those crest white strips), and it didn't really work to make them less noticeable. :-/

Oooh, I forgot to add: Who does these procedures? Can a regular dentist, or do I need to go to a cosmetic dentist?

Hi Melissa,

I think most dentist's have experience is doing these kind of applications, you really do not need a cosmetic dentist, they probablky charge more money, I noticed you think you want bonding, but keep in mind, bonding will stain and veneers will not. Bonding is cheaper but not for the long run as you have to keep doing them. I am guessing here, but I think you can put bonding/veneers on any teeth, you just need to tell him/her your concerns and where you want it done, good luck and let us know how you are doing....:)
