Pain with a temporary crown? - Dental Health Message Board

My husband broke a molar about a month ago and had a temporary crown put on until the permanent one is ready. He had the temp one put on almost 2 weeks ago. They did the typical drilling down of the tooth and everything and he was fine until about 2 days ago. After waking up one morning he said he was was feeling pain, not throbbing pain, but just a dull ache. After he was up for a while he said it was fine. Then later that day he took a nap and it starting hurting again, this time he said it was throbbing. He took some aspirin and was fine, but said it was really sensitive to cold after he had a drink. Could he have an infection? Or could the root now be exposed and he now needs a root canal? He does not have his appointment yet for the permanent crown and I am wondering if he should call the dentist and see if this is a problem? Has anyone experienced something like this? It only seems to hurt after he has been laying down.

Often a temporary cap is very ill fitting and cuts into the gum. Needless to say they are almost NEVER a tight fit.
Odds are the REAL one will fit and feel better.

Why 2 weeks to make a new crown? Is it possible they are MEDICATING the tooth for awhile to stop an infection. If that is the case than the situation might be more serious than just a poorly fitting temporary.

Hello-I am having the same problem, after a few days of the temporary crown. How can I tell if it is the crown is causing the problem or something more serious? The gum is a bit swollen at the gum line...could this cause vague aching and burning? Also more pain when lying down...

They told him 2 weeks for the new crown to come in. I don't think they are medicating the tooth. If they are they didn't mention it to him. He wasn't in any pain after he boke the original tooth and in the 2 weeks before he got the temporary crown.
