Question about a filling.

Maybe I'm just being a wuss, but I figured I'd ask.

I got a filling four months ago. It chipped. Along with the filling it also chipped the far back top corner of my tooth. Nothing bad, it's not like it split down the center to the root, but it had a small piece that fell off.

I got a new filling put in thursday. Everything seems well. But there's still some lingering pain. It's not BAD at all, it's just noticable. I haven't eaten anything hard yet, all I've eaten was mac and cheese and a sandwich, and even then I chewed on the opposite side.

I haven't had a filling since I was a kid. Granted I'm only 20 but I simply can't remember. Is it normal for your tooth to be kind of sore afterwards? Cause my mind is thinking... AHHH! ROOT CANAL! But maybe I'm just traumatizing myself? A friend of mine had a filling, it chipped and fell out, and later that day her tooth chipped down the center to her root... bam, root canal. She's two years younger than me.

Re: Question about a filling.

Hi there! I had a bunch of fillings done last year and one of them bothered me for quite some time, months! Not really bad, but noticable. If you do not have any real pain, chances are it will lessen and lessen and eventually feel "normal". If your nerve is dying it would be painful, people have said that even painkillers could get rid of the pain. So I would wait a while and see what happens. Another cause could be that your bite is off, so it might be a good idea to get that checked out by your dentist. Good luck!

Re: Question about a filling.

Nah, my bite isn't off. My first filling I noticed was like that. That same filling is what chipped this time. This time when I felt the little buldge on top of the tooth that caused the bite being off the first time, I said something to the dentist. He got this piece of paper out and I bit down on it so he could see the high points of the filling. So he did some light scraping since the filling was soft yet and I just kept biting down until it was right. Took about 15 seconds extra to do. Very happy with the bite effect this time. And it's been a day since I originally posted this and I feel much better, but it's still distantly sensitive. Oh well! Time should change that.

Any input from the root canal thing? I didn't realize you needed a root canal from a chipped tooth. I guess it depends how severe it is?

Re: Question about a filling.

You only need a root canal if your nerve is dying. Trauma can cause this, such as drilling, or usually if you have decay and it is too close to the nerve. But I think your case sounds like you just need some time and the tooth will "calm" down.

Re: Question about a filling.

Oh, I meant to say if the nerve is dying or already dead...
