High filling toothache! - Dental Health Message Board

Hello,

I went to the dentists on friday for a checkup ( i did not have toothache or anything) and he said i needed a filling and he could do it that day so i got it done and since then i have had seriously bad toothache which is giving me sore eyes and a shooting pain up the side of my face and it is really thumping and painful!!!

So i went back to my dentists this morning and he said it was a "high filling" and that was the problem so he drilled it down a bit. I asked how long the pain would last and he said it should be better by tommorow, this was about 8 hours ago and the pain is still just as bad! I think my dentist is talking rubbish. Anyone know what the problem could be? and does anyone have a good cure for pain relief? so far anadin and iburofen isnt working.

The tooth may still be sensitive from the trauma of it being hit or bitten on too hard as a result of it being left too high as well as from the filling itself - you may have to give it a few days to settle down. But if it doesn't ease up within a week then it could be that the nerve was damaged (deep cavities can casue this) or is dying or infected so it may need a root canal. I'm not sure what is available where you are - is Aleve (Naproxen) or NSAIDs sold OTC there - they work very well on dental pain.

Just like the last poster said.

My experience with pain is that sometimes it takes a high dose intitally (of ibuprofen) to alleviate the pain. If you have ever had it prescribed you are aware of how high the doses can be than OTC. I take a higher dose then take lesser doses every couple hours. Once I feel relief I space out the doses to every four hours. Mind you, this is in one day. I would be concerned if I'm not feeling some relief after this because it could mean something else is going on. I would expect to feel considerably better after a few days

Also, I take a product like Pepcid 30 minutes before the higher dose and then a couple more times (3 doses in one day.) This was recommended by my doctor because my stomach gets "torn up" otherwise (from the ibuprofen).
