I have the same problem. I used to use a medium bristle but switched to soft at the advice of the dentist. I have tooth brush abrasions from brushing too hard- you can damage your teeth from brushing too hard. Your gums can recede, and I have little "dents" near my gum line. They start out sharp (if you run your tongue over them) but dull with time. Every time I go in the hygenist tells me I brush too hard. She advised using a motorized toothbrush- and just guiding it along your teeth - letting it do all the work. They're fairly inexpensive, you may want to try one.
