Jaw pain after extraction - Dental Health Message Board

I had a tooth extraction a week ago and it is healing fine - no dry socket etc. However, my whole jaw hurts on both sides. The extraction was an upper back molar. I have thought I had a toothache on the other side, but it seems to be mostly truama from the extraction. I can remember thinking during the extraction that wow that is really hurting on the other side. It took a lot of force from the dentist to get it out - a lot of rocking and pulling. Has anyone experienced this and if so how long does it take to feel better. The aching is really getting to me.

Was your tooth abcessed ? If so the pain could last a little longer in the gums and are you on any meds for the pain . If not then ask the oral surgeon to give you some and tell him or her about the pain you still have . I had an abecess tooth pulled in the back of my mouth , but not much pain .

Not sure what is causing the pain but be careful. Was this a bottom tooth? Wisdom? I had a bottom wisdom tooth extracted and had jaw pain. Because of the pain I would barely open my jaw and it ended up getting stuck that way. The dentist said that the only thing he could do is either send me to the hospital and they would have to break my jaw, or I could try tongue depressors. Yes, you read right..tongue depressors. So I had to stack the TD's between my teeth to work my jaw open. First day started out only able to put two between my teeth, then worked my way up every day. To this day I have jaw problems (TMJ) and my mouth sure doesnt open as wide as it use to. Just be sure you exercise your jaw plenty. If its starting to tighten up that could be causing your pain.
