Extracting 4 (non-impacted) Wisdom Teeth - Pain Killer Suggestions? - Dental Health Message Board

Hi,

29 year old male here getting ready to have all 4 wisdom teeth extracted. My main question is in regard to pain killers. I am extremely sensitive to them and would almost rather bare the pain than have to deal with the dopey side effects. Is it true that Motrin 800 or even Aleve can work well enough for the pain following extractions? Even if they have to cut into the gums?

I don't think they'll have to cut into my gums, as all 4 teeth have broken well above the gumline. However, my dentist said the roots are wide and one root is even growing at an odd angle... My guess is that they'll have to break the tooth to extract it in separate pieces.

Anyway, back on subject, I have a pretty high tolerance for pain and would rather endure a little pain than be loopy on painkillers for days on end. Have any of you rode it out on just Motrin and Aleve?

I have had five teeth extracted this summer and done them all with Motrin or Advil. I have been given pain prescriptions each time but never filled them as I agree with you, don't like that loopy feeling. Take the prescription when offered just in case you need it or to take at bedtime. Ask your pharmacist though if it can be taken with Motrin. If you get a prescription Motrin then keep in mind that four over the counter Motrins equal one prescription. My oral surgeon told me I could take three over the counter Motrin every six hours. Things are going to hurt and be sore for awhile, but if you tolerate pain well then you should be fine with over the counter medications. Follow your oral surgeon's guidelines - ice when told to, salt water rinse when told to, eat very lightly, and should the pain become intense call your oral surgeon to have it checked out. That is what they are there for and don't mind making sure things are OK or treating if not. Good luck to you.
