Front teeth hurt when waking up in morning

I have something to confess. I used to suck my fingers until I was 23. That was around a year ago. I finally stopped and was so happy I finally kicked my bad childhood habit. But now I notice when I wake up in the morning my front teeth hurt. I think that now my tongue is pushing out my front teeth while I am sleeping. Maybe I was used to my fingers and now I have replaced it with my tongue. I have always had an overbite but now I am scared it is getting bigger. Are there any mouth pieces or night guards that will keep my tongue from pushing on my front teeth at night??
Thanks!

Re: Front teeth hurt when waking up in morning

I would suggest you see an ortho - thumbsucking changes the shape of the upper palate - it forces the upper palate to develop a high arch and does induce an overbite and that is what is probably allowing your tongue to push against your front teeth. The fact that your front teeth hurt upon wakening may indicate you have some malocculsion occuring or that your bite is not meeting correctly due to the overbite. A customized night or mouth guard may help but if not prodessionaly made they can sometimes cause more problems so you may want to see a professional and have your bite evaluated first.
