deep scale cleaning

I recently had a deep scale cleaning on my teeth. The dentist gave me about 6 shots of novacaine on each side. The total came to $1000 dollars $250 per quad. Not including the xrays. He said I had early stage gum disease and about 10% bone loss with some pockets around my teeth.
This seems really expensive. I live in Downtown Jersey City. Did I get ripped off?

Re: deep scale cleaning

I was at the dentist yesterday and was told I need a deep cleaning. They charge $800 (not including xrays). Since I don't have insurance they will give me a discount and it will be $680.

Re: deep scale cleaning

Leslie,
I had a scaling done 2 years ago and it was $1000 then, without x-rays! Glad I had it done though, my gums seem "stable" now.

Re: deep scale cleaning

Leslie,

I had deep scaling done a few years ago in Manhattan. It was $250 per quadrant...So, I'm not surprised you paid that in Jersey City.

Bergerbaby--Deep scaling is done for early periodontal disease, I believe (I'm not a dentist, so don't quote me on that!) But generally, if they do a periodontal exam and find that you have a lot of "pockets", then they might suggest a deep scaling. It is a much more intensive kind of cleaning, and the dentist really probes into your gums and it can be painful...that's why anesthetic is needed. It's really not that bad of a procedure though, pain-wise...
