shaving down teeth

my orthodontist has been seeing me since i was 7 (im 19 now). in ma/june of this year i went under jaw surgery for my mild underbite. ive had braces for the past 2 years also. so he said the next time i see him in january, what they are going to do is shave down my teeth to close up the spaces i still have. is this right? will any permanent damage be done to my teeth? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
