Painful gums

In 2001 I fell and chipped off my 2 front teeth. The dentist put in new crowns. The gums around the crowns were painful for 8 months but the dentist said to keep brushing and flossing and prescribed antibiotics and tylenol with codeine, which I was taking all that time. After 8 months the pain went away for 6 years. Now the pain has started up again for 4 days, and I am worried about it since I am 63 years old and in otherwise good health, but feel the inflammation could spread to other areas. The dentist said it's a low-grade inflammation of the gums and he said if the pain doesn't calm down by next week with brushing and flossing and penicillin and tylenol with codeine, he will refer me to a specialist. I am very anxious about this pain and don't know where it's coming from or what the solution is.

Re: Painful gums

i suffer a lot with swollen and sore gums i too get brushed off and given anti biotics, and pain killers, but its not a long term solution.well at least your dentist is refering you to a specialist .
hopefully they be able to find out whats causing sore gums.
main cause IMO is a infection of the tooth as it is commonly known crowns can get infected as food gets inbetween the crown and the tooth underneath the tooth and gums area.

i am only 44 ,and realising i will probably be better off with having all my teeth out ,to have a denture, but i am scared to go through with it,and also harder as dentist says nothing wrong but when your in constant pain all the time ,and discomfort ,you keep thinking can it be any worse?

well, good luck and hope the specialist finds the cure for you and sorts out your problem .and hopefully you can tell me what he said ,that i can follow suit.so i dont have to go to drastic measure having a denture at bottom
