Many people say "novocaine" to mean any kind of local anesthetic. Actually Novocaine has not been used in dentistry for many years. Dentists use Lidocaine, Mepivicaine, Articaine, Carbocaine, and several other local anesthetics. Sounds like your gums are sore from the actual work done in prepping for the crowns. The dentist has to work right next to or slightly under the gums and they get pretty scuffed up. You could also have muscle soreness from the needle piercing the muscle tissue.
