I recently found a lump on the top part of my gum as well. I've been having trouble with a tooth for a few months.....the lump is an abscess in my tooth.
If you've been having trouble with your teeth, I would suggest you go to your dentist asap. I waited too long and woke up on Friday morning on my birthday no less, with half my face all swollen up. I had then to go to an Emergency visit to the dentist and I'm now on antibiotics and waiting to get a root canal.
Good luck, there's lots of things it could be, try not to worry, but get it checked out to get some peace of mind.
