Question Black teeth by gumline gums receding too!

Friend does not take care of his teeth much, and now he's worried about cancer..
Most of his teeth are BLACK all up by the gumline ( like someone painted a thick line with eyeliner).. Also, his gums are receding and sore..
He says the teeth feel loose..
Could this be heavy duty plaque or tarter? Other than the stripe around the top of the tooth and the reddened gums they look ok..
I got him an electric toothbrush, and am having him brush sensodone, and rinse out his mouth with a peroxide and water mix.. I won't touch his mouth, but is there anything he can do to see if it is plaque or tarter?
Maybe then he will stop worrying and just go to the dentist.. He has no insurance, and has had problems with dentists screwing him over in the past... Any ideas as to what this is?

Your friend has periodontal disease. What you have done for him is a good start, but he needs to see a dentist to get the tartar removed or at least a hygeinist. I don't know if they can work independently of dentists in the US. If they can, the treatment should be cheaper.

Hygienists cannot work alone, nor should they be able to. I agree though, he needs a deep cleaning to be able to do any good with home care.
